In 1990, Apple Vacations began honoring hotels that earned exceptional ratings on the company’s post-vacation surveys with the Golden Apple Awards. Five years later, the Crystal Apple Award was born to honor leaders in quality and innovation for various categories in travel and hospitality. Apple Vacations was the first, and remains the only vacation company to rate hotels based solely on customer feedback, long before today’s popular travel review websites were born.

In 2019, Apple Vacations awarded 229 hotels throughout Mexico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica and Hawaii with its Golden Apple Award for high levels of excellence. Travel agents report that the Golden Apple designation builds consumer confidence and has a major influence on hotel purchase decisions.

The Apple Vacations Golden Apple Gala was held at Chicago’s Theatre on the Lake where the honorees enjoyed dinner and a fireworks show over Chicago’s magnificent lakefront. Esteemed guests included several hotel owners, CEO’s and presidents, and tourism dignitaries including the Honorable Francisco Javier Garcia, Dominican Republic Minster of Tourism; and Minister German Ralis, State of Jalisco (Mexico) Minister of Tourism.

The following day, Apple Leisure Group Vacations hosted its first Ascend trade show, engaging more than 950 travel agents at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace, IL – one of the most attended in the industry. International and domestic representatives from major airlines, ground operators, tourism boards and hotels networked with retailers and disseminated materials at 110 booths.
