Travel insights from Andrea Sedlacek, editor of The Compass

June Editor’s Note

I am writing to you from LGA (confession: I kind of like this airport, is that weird?), waiting to go home after attending Caribbean Week in New York, an annual event hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Here are some fun facts I learned:

  1. Grenada does not allow Styrofoam on the islands.
  2. Anegada, one of the British Virgin Islands, has native flamingoes!
  3. Montserrat, part of the Lesser Antilles, has a week-long St. Patrick’s Day festival every year to celebrate the island’s Irish and African heritages.

Who knew??

Moving on, we have SO many new suppliers on VAX, I just have to talk about them. So ICYMI, here are the newbies:

This month, we’re focusing on adventure travel, kicking off with selling strategies for expedition cruises. On the destination front, we’re talking about Central America. Belize is an emerging destination, so here are four Belizean excursions for travelers wanting to get some culture. Be on the lookout for a spotlight on the Central American offerings from AMResorts, VAX agents’ top resort picks in Costa Rica, a guide to the ruins in Central America and more. Do you specialize in either adventure travel or Central America? Hit me up at – we’d love to include your insights on The Compass.

What else do we have going on? Well, hold on to your hats because SeaWorld Orlando is once again offering visitors free beer all summer. I will definitely cheers to that. You’ve probably heard the news, but in case you haven’t, the U.S. government has put an end to people-to-people travel to Cuba. This is really unfortunate and probably crushed a lot of Americans’ travel dreams.

One last thing that will maybe offset the bummer of the Cuba news – I knew that Travel Impressions’ portfolio of destinations was vast, but this piece had me drooling over every one of the under-the-radar places. If anyone’s headed to Taormina, Sicily soon, can I come with you?

I wanted to be a fairy godmother. That was my dream job when I was five. Who wouldn’t want to be a magical being that appears when people need help? October Editor’s Note

Did last month’s editor’s note seem a little different to you? I can explain. I wrote last month’s note in preparation for The Mark Travel Corporation’s Summit event, which I was lucky enough to attend for the first time. And even luckier, I had the opportunity to lead a workshop for the attendees.
