Imagine for a moment a traveler lost in a bustling foreign city without a map, GPS on their phone or a destination in mind. They wander aimlessly, unsure of where they are headed or what experiences they hope to find.  As you read that sentence, I imagine that the best advisors among us would be cringing about now. Who would do that? Surely they did not use a travel advisor! Yet, if we shift our focus to the world of your travel business this is what many do on a regular basis. We set out on our journey with no specific destination or map of how to get there. Just like the lost traveler, businesses without a clear intention often find themselves drifting, lacking direction and struggling to reach their goals. This is where the power of being intentional comes into play.

If you have read the Travel Hi Five before you might have heard me talk about goals and objectives. For sure you need those although I want to distinguish it this month and focus on the power of intentionality. Said another way; this is thinking about each task, action, client call, FAM trip or supplier training and asking yourself what your intention is for doing that thing.

Now for story time: Once upon a time, in the vast wilderness of the African savannah, there lived a pride of lions. Among them was a young lion Simba. Simba was carefree and spent his days playing and exploring without a sense of purpose. One day, an older lion named Mufasa shared some wisdom with Simba saying, “Simba, one day this will all be yours. If you want to survive and thrive in this challenging environment, you must be intentional in your actions.”  Simba took Mufasa’s advice to heart and started to observe the hunting techniques of the older, more experienced lions. He realized that their success was not merely due to strength and agility but also their calculated and strategic approach. Inspired by this realization, Simba transformed himself into a focused and intentional hunter. He became a formidable force in the savannah, leading his pride to prosperity (cue the music – be honest, you started humming it!).

Here then is a travel advisor’s guide to being intentional in business.

Defining a Clear Vision

Being intentional in business starts with having a clear vision. Travel advisors must identify their long-term goals and visualize what success looks like for their business. This vision serves as a guiding star, directing decisions and actions towards the desired outcome. By defining a clear vision, travel advisors can align their strategies, marketing efforts and customer interactions accordingly.

Targeting the Right Audience

To achieve success, travel advisors must identify and target their ideal audience. Intentionally selecting a niche market allows for personalized and tailored services, creating a unique value proposition. By understanding their target audience's needs, preferences and pain points, travel advisors can develop customized experiences, build long-lasting relationships and establish a strong reputation in the industry. Each customer interaction should have a stated intention.

Quick Tip – Before you pick up the phone for a prospect or client interaction ask yourself, “What outcome do I want to achieve with this call?” This is another way to state your intention.

Crafting a Specialized Service Offering

Being intentional means focusing on what makes your travel advisory business stand out. By crafting a specialized service offering, travel advisors can differentiate themselves from the competition. This can include niche destinations, unique travel packages or exclusive partnerships with local guides and suppliers. Specialization enhances credibility, establishes expertise and attracts clients seeking tailored experiences.

Embracing Technology and Innovation

In today's digital age, being intentional in business means embracing technology and innovation. Travel advisors should leverage tools like customer relationship management (CRM) systems, data analytics and social media platforms to streamline operations, enhance customer experiences and stay ahead of market trends. Adopting technology enables travel advisors to provide efficient and personalized services while maximizing their reach and impact.

Quick Tip – By even thinking about intention you may be able to say “no” to some technology that will crowd your brain and make you lose focus. Learn to say “no” to some of the bright shiny objects out there.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

To remain intentional and relevant in a dynamic industry, travel advisors must be committed to continuous learning and adaptation. Staying informed about emerging destinations, industry trends and evolving customer demands allows for proactive adjustments to business strategies. Attending industry conferences, participating in training programs and networking with peers can provide valuable insights and foster growth opportunities.

Quick Tip – We often gain expertise by attending supplier or destination training. For each educational event you attend think about what you want to gain from it and how you will put it to use. You will never put it all to use but if you have a clear intention you will find the nuggets that will be meaningful for your business

So there you have it, happy hunting for business in an intentional way. There is enough business out there to be had for sure. But like Simba, we must be strategic and calculated in our approach. We may not always be able to rely on our natural strengths that brought us to this business but by being intentional travel advisors can navigate the dynamic business landscape with purpose and achieve sustainable growth.
