As the world’s largest source of surface freshwater, America’s Great Lakes — Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario and Lake Superior — play a role of major importance for the U.S. and Canada. In addition to their waters being converted into drinking water for over 40 million people, the Great Lakes generate jobs for millions and act as a sanctuary for thousands of plant and animal species, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
The Great Lakes are a resource to be cherished, and with nearly 10,000 cumulative miles of shoreline, they’re also home to some pretty amazing beaches. Here are a few of the best beaches to visit along America’s Great Lakes.
Lake Erie
Lake Erie spans 9,910 square miles and touches the states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
Kelleys Island State Park Beach, OH
Perfect for fans of outdoor pursuits, natural history and ancient marine life, a stay at Ohio’s Kelleys Island State Park is an unforgettable way to experience the magic of Lake Erie. Home to a 150-foot public swimming beach, the island’s gradual water depth paired with a boat launch, kayak rentals, fishing pier, state park campground and hiking trails make it a favorite among visitors of all ages. With an area of ~11.3-square-feet, Kelleys Island is the largest Lake Erie island in U.S. waters. The site is also one of geological importance as it plays host to glacial formations and rare fossils dating back over 400 million years.
Presque Isle State Park, PA
Home to not one, not two, but nine beautiful beaches, Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle State Park is a great spot to enjoy a day or two along the sparkling shores of Lake Erie. Welcoming millions of visitors each year, locals fondly refer to Presque Isle State Park as the region’s only “seashore,” and with 3,200 sandy acres to explore, it’s no surprise the peninsula is so popular. In addition to water-based activities like swimming, paddling, windsurfing and fishing, this state park is also a fantastic choice for hiking, biking, skating and jogging.
Lake Huron
Lake Huron spans 23,000 square miles and borders the U.S. state of Michigan.
Oscoda Beach Park, MI
Situated three blocks from downtown Oscoda, Oscoda Beach Park is part gathering place, part recreational area and part backdrop for sandy fun. With no shortage of nearby shops and restaurants, the park is easily accessible and boasts a variety of amenities like seasonal bathrooms, a splash pad for youngsters, a skate park, basketball court, a playground, picnic tables and charcoal grills. The beach itself totals 1,025 feet and touts soft sands and a long boardwalk, perfect for breezy days spent relaxing along the shore. Throughout the summer, the town hosts events and festivals here including free concerts and movie nights set up just footsteps from mighty Lake Huron.
Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan is the second-largest Great Lake at 307 miles long and 118 miles wide. Lake Michigan borders Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
Oak Street Beach, Chicago, IL
An urban beach that’s worth its salt, Midwesterners love making the very most out of the short and precious summer months and Chicago’s busy Oak Street Beach lives up to the hype. Located on Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street Beach unites the Gold Coast and Steeterville neighborhoods with endless entertainment by way of bike rentals, volleyball games, swimming, and lazy lounging beneath the sun. The definition of juxtaposition, this little slice of paradise is a welcomed change of pace amidst the busy streets and skyscrapers of The Windy City.
Schoolhouse Beach, WI
One of the world’s five limestone pebble beaches, Schoolhouse Beach is as rare as it is beautiful. Only accessible by boat, this natural wonder is also remote as visitors will need to board a ferry on mainland Door County before heading to Wisconsin’s picturesque Washington Island to get to it. However, as they traverse the beach’s surprisingly smooth, polished shores, travelers will find Schoolhouse Beach is worth the trek — an incredible sight thousands of years in the making.
Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI
Dubbed the “Most Beautiful Place in America” by ABC’s Good Morning America, Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of three designated U.S. National Lakeshores. An attraction that finds itself atop many nature lovers’ bucket lists, visitors of Sleeping Bear Dunes can expect to create core memories as they partake in unforgettable beach days from the comfort of sands that rise 460 feet above Lake Michigan. The scene is truly a sight to behold and with the moniker “The Caribbean of the Midwest,” vacationers will love taking a dip in the area’s refreshing waters accessible from the park’s seven primary beaches in addition to learning about local history, exploring old-timey lighthouses, hiking, sailing and more.
Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is 7,340 square miles and borders the state of New York.
Ontario Beach Park, NY
Those in search of a sandy beach day need to look no further than Rochester’s Ontario Beach Park. Comprising 39 acres, Ontario Beach Park is great for swimming, boating and picnicking on the shore while gazebos, a classic wooden boardwalk and historical carousel dating back 100+ years work to add a touch of charm. In the summer pickleball and volleyball steal the show, while every season acts as a reason to celebrate with themed festivals and events like the Lakeside Winter Celebration each February, Kite Flight in May, Autumn at the Lake in October and more.
Lake Superior
Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes at 31,7000 square miles and borders Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Black Beach, MN
A black sand beach in Minnesota? Yes, you read that right. The result of taconite tailings and industrial pollution discarded into Lake Superior, years of restoration and cleanup have transformed Black Beach into the clean and safe attraction it is today. And, with dazzling blue waters and warm sedimentary sandstone rock formations complimenting the striking onyx sands, we must say the result is rather magnificent. In addition to being the ultimate backdrop for a photoshoot, Black Beach boasts warm, shallow waters that are perfect for swimming.
Twelvemile Beach, MI
Recognized as one of “America’s Best Beaches to Visit in 2026” by Conde Nast Traveler, as the name implies, Twelvemile Beach is a 12-mile-long beach nestled within Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a beautiful natural area with dramatic geological formations dating back 500 million years. Flanked by low-lying glacial dunes and dotted with white birch, pine and maple trees, this unique beach is the ultimate lookout point for gazing at Lake Superior’s captivating blue-green waters, getting lost in dreamy sunsets and listening to the gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore.
