Have you ever found yourself alone in a creepy hotel room scouring the property’s TripAdvisor reviews for the word “haunted” as you’re trying (and failing) to fall asleep? No, just me? While it’s not uncommon for things to feel a bit “off” the first night you try getting some shut eye in a new environment, we can all agree that some hotels are downright spooky. From unfamiliar creeks and noises to a weird mirror or artwork in the corner, it’s easy to let your imagination run wild after the lights go out.

But what if, instead of raising paranoia, that strange sound you heard around the corner wasn’t in your head at all? What if it was from an unseen, unwelcome, guest that never checked out? We’re talking, of course, about ghosts, a topic the team at social gaming platform, ACE.com, has on their minds after releasing a new study revealing “the most haunted hotels in America.”  To crown the top 10 scariest stays, the group sifted through 90,000+ TripAdvisor reviews across 34 hotels, identifying which properties had the most ratings featuring paranormal-related terms — think words like “ghost,” “haunting,” “paranormal” and “spooky.”

“There are an average of over 11,000 Google searches for ‘haunted hotels’ every month in the US, with searches rising by 98% in October in the run-up to Halloween,” said ACE.com. “Whether guests are looking for a ghost tour, a historic setting or simply a memorable overnight stay, these hotels offer a more unusual way to embrace the season.”

Screeching into first place was The Haunted Shanley Hotel in Napanoch, New York, a property ACE.com said had 120 combined paranormal-related search matches per 100 TripAdvisor reviews. “As a single review can match more than 1 of the 8 terms searched, scores can exceed 100,” said ACE.com. Runner up was Jeffreson, Texas’ Jefferson Palace Hotel with 65 matches per 100 reviews, living up to the destination’s creepy reputation. In third came The Historic Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts, a bed and breakfast that lives in infamy following the unsolved axe murders of 1892. And, finally, The Stanley Hotel, a Rocky Mountain hideaway with ties to horror author Stephen King, rounded things out in fourth with 43 matches per 100 reviews.
