Some of us have a natural talent for storytelling, whether that be through words, pictures or in writing. However, even expert storytellers can be left speechless by a stunning mountain, authentic dining experience or the genuine hospitality of strangers.
Part of selling destinations is being able to bring them to life for prospective clients through engaging content. Whether it’s on social media, your website or when describing your trips to others, translating your travel experiences into compelling stories can show your passion and firsthand knowledge. People love conversations about travel and it’s a fantastic way to build or strengthen a connection.
Traveling greatly benefits your travel business, but it only adds value for your clients if you offer them something meaningful. Whether it’s information, inspiration or entertainment, take a moment to consider what you want your audience to gain. For example, a blog post might have a goal of demonstrating why a certain cruise ship is ideal for families or telling readers about the best way to explore Alaska. Your aim in sharing your story should be to gain your clients’ trust, which will lead to future bookings.
Remember that not every single moment of your trip is worthy of re-telling. You may have snapped hundreds of photos, but not every picture is worth sharing with the world. Think of yourself as the curator of your travel experiences and your brand. Whether you’re recapping your recent trip in your email newsletter or uploading photos to Facebook, showcase the most memorable experiences. Think of the highlights of each day. Your wow-worthy moments will probably be the most interesting to your audience too.
Stories are driven by words, so you can think of each word as a chance to pull your listeners into the narrative. Try to be as specific as possible with descriptions. Don’t just say that an island was beautiful or that a meal was delicious; explain how it was beautiful, and why it was delicious. Mix up your writing by using action words as often as possible, and by drawing on all five senses for your descriptions.
Don’t be afraid to recall how a place or experience made you feel. Include yourself and your travel companions in some of your photos whenever possible. Your unique, personal touch is what draws people to book through you.
We might not all have the same tastes in terms of what’s relaxing or fun. But everyone can relate to emotions: feeling calm, thrilled or amazed. Pull in those emotions in re-telling the stories of your adventures. It’s those feelings that will help turn your travel memories into inspiration for others.

When Mike was in the US Navy he was stationed in Puerto Rico--what a beautiful experience. I taught 1st grade on Fort Buchanan--each room terraced to the outside. Every school break Mike would take leave & we traveled the Caribbean extensively. Sea plane to St. thomas, Aruba, Curacao, Granada, Hati & more! We had a Puerto Rican maid who cared for our baby & when we left 3 year old Teddy spoke both English & Spanish
