One of the biggest mistakes I see new travel advisors make is believing that becoming a travel business owner will suddenly turn them into a completely different person.

“This is the year I’m finally going to get organized.”
“This is the year technology will suddenly make sense to me.”
“This is the year I become someone I really haven’t been for the last 20 years.”

The truth is, building a successful business is not about becoming someone else. It’s about learning how to work with who you are.

We all have strengths. We all have challenges. The key is not pretending those challenges don’t exist. The key is understanding them well enough to create systems, support and strategies that help you succeed anyway.

Accepting What Comes Naturally and What Doesn’t

Some people naturally love technology. They enjoy learning new systems, testing tools and figuring things out. Others do not, and that’s okay. If technology does not come naturally to you, you are not failing. It simply means you may need a different approach than someone else.

Instead of trying to master every new app, platform or tool all at once, focus on learning one system really well. Know it inside and out. Understand how it works. Give yourself permission to take extra time learning it. There is nothing wrong with needing additional training or repetition. Too many people compare themselves to others and assume everyone else learns instantly. They don’t. Some people simply hide their struggles better than others.

The Telephone Still Exists

One thing I constantly remind new agents of is this: You do not have to do everything online.

Many suppliers still have incredible reservation agents available by phone. If you struggle with technology, work with suppliers that support you in ways that fit your learning style.

Choose companies with:

  • Helpful reservation teams
  • Reasonable hold times
  • Human support
  • Strong agent assistance

In a world obsessed with technology, we sometimes forget that talking to another human being is still one of the best tools available. You do not lose credibility because you ask questions or use the phone instead of doing everything online. You are still serving your clients.

AI Can Help Fill the Gaps

One of the greatest opportunities today is AI technology. Not because it replaces travel advisors. Not because it does all the work for us. But because it can help us bridge the areas where we struggle.

If you do not understand how to do something, ask AI. You can literally type:
“How do I do this?”
“Can you walk me through this step-by-step?”
“Explain this in simple terms.”

And often, it can guide you through the process without you spending hours frustrated and overwhelmed. There are even AI tools now that can:

  • Help build websites
  • Create marketing content
  • Organize ideas
  • Draft emails
  • Assist with social media
  • Simplify complicated tasks

The important part is understanding that AI is not there to judge you.

You can even tell it:
“I’m not good at technology.”
“I need simple instructions.”
“Explain this like I’m a beginner.”

That is the kind of technology travel advisors should embrace.  Look for technology that supports your weaknesses instead of making you feel ashamed of them.

Stop Believing You Have To Do Everything Yourself

As business owners, we often feel pressure to do everything ourselves. But being a travel advisor does not mean you must become a bookkeeper, web designer, marketing expert, social media strategist and a technology specialist … You are in the travel business.

Your strength may be relationships. It may be sales. It may be customer service. It may be creating amazing experiences for clients. That is where your energy should go.

If bookkeeping is your weakness, hire help. If marketing overwhelms you, outsource it. If organization is difficult for you, find systems or support that help compensate. Sometimes people hesitate because outsourcing costs money. But what if removing those tasks gave you more time to focus on clients, sales, and growing your business? What if the hours you spend frustrated trying to do everything yourself are actually costing you more than getting help?

Success Is About Building Around Who You Are

The most successful business owners are not people who are perfect at everything. They are people who understand themselves. They know:

  • What they do well
  • What drains them
  • Where they struggle
  • When to ask for help
  • How to create support systems

Success does not come from pretending to be someone else. It comes from building a business that works with your strengths while creating solutions for your challenges. And honestly, there is a lot of freedom in finally admitting “I’m not great at this part.” Because once you admit it, you can stop fighting yourself and start finding solutions. That is where real growth begins.
