It happens all the time. When meeting someone socially for the first time, part of the conversation goes something like this: “What do you do?” and you answer, “I’m a Travel Agent.” Sound familiar? I hope not!

If that is your answer, you’re probably missing an opportunity to make yourself memorable. Unfortunately, we all know that a percentage of the population either thinks we’ve gone the way of the dinosaurs, or they have firmly decided that they can find whatever they need themselves online. A better response lets them know you’re engaged in making people’s vacation dreams come true.

If you haven’t already, you need a very compelling and personal response to that question. So, develop one that includes a few short and simple elements including your name, the fact that you’re a travel agent, what you’re especially good at, and why that matters. In a recent Travel Institute webinar, I used an example like this:

"My name is Joan Smith

I’m a family vacation ‘planner.’ I know that when planning a family vacation, it’s often difficult to find a destination and property that are a good fit – for the entire family.

I match expectations with the right destination, the right property, and the right package that results in experiences families remember for years to come."

Now, I expect that you are a wiz (or becoming one) at helping align people with the best river cruise for them, or the ideal family vacation properties in the Caribbean, etc. Why not take every opportunity to let people know that?

In a few short words, you’ll impress them with your “competitive advantage” and, if done well, you’ve left them with a memorable idea of how you can help them. Better yet, when they speak with friends and family contemplating a trip, they’ll be able to recommend you with confidence that you’ll really be helpful.

I’d hate to hear that you missed the mark by providing a bland and forgettable response like “I’m a travel agent.” You are much more than that and you can let more people know that by developing (and practicing) a response that opens the door to further conversation and more clients.
