A consistent fan-favorite destination for its gorgeous beaches, relaxing vibes and rich culture, Honolulu is adding on to the long list of reasons why travelers love the city — it’s been named the “Safesty City to Travel to in the World” for 2024.
The honor, presented by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, was awarded to city representatives, public safety professionals and visiting industry partners in a recent press conference. Honolulu ranked first in its health measures, safety for women, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC groups and safety from violent crimes. The city was also rated second in safety from terrorism and third for transportation. A significant jump from the 12th place ranking in 2023, city officials and representatives reflected on the collaborative efforts required to earn this accolade.
“As an organization, we are working with our community partners, elected officials and businesses here to keep the City and County of Honolulu safe for everyone, from partnering programs such as Waikiki Safe and Sound or Weed and Seed in neighborhoods including Chinatown,” said Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan of the Honolulu Police Department. “We can’t do it alone as we work every single day for Honolulu to be the safest place in the world.”
Solidifying these results, the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism published its First Quarter 2024 Visitor Satisfaction and Activity Survey results, finding that more than 90% of visitors considered the Hawaiian Islands to be “excellent” or “above average” when it came to being a safe and secure destination.
“It’s a competitive world and we will not rest on our laurels. We must ensure that people who come here continue to have a safe place to visit,” said Mufi Hannemann, Hawai’i Tourism Authority board chair and Hawai’i Lodging & Tourism Association president and CEO.
Prosecutor Steve Alm for the city and county of Honolulu added on, mentioning that this award was only made possible because of the city’s group effort.
“This recognition is a testament to everyone here about making Honolulu as safe as possible, as well as every other community on O’ahu,” stated Alm. “From the community organizations and neighborhood boards to each individual, it’s about collaboration and working together.”
