One of the biggest challenges I see with new travel advisors is this: they fall in love with the travel … but forget about the business. And I get it. Travel is exciting. It’s why most of us got into this industry in the first place. But if you want your business to last and actually grow, you have to shift your mindset.

You’re not just a travel advisor. You’re a business owner. And that requires a completely different way of thinking.

Start Thinking Like a Business Owner

Travel Less, Build More

Let’s start with a tough question: If you’re always traveling, when are you actually running your business?

Travel can be valuable, especially for learning and content, but it can also become a distraction. If you’re constantly planning your next trip, you’re not focusing on your clients, your marketing or your growth. Successful advisors are intentional. They don’t say yes to every trip. They choose travel that supports their business and they leave space to actually work.

Know Your Numbers

It’s not enough to book trips, you need to understand what you’re earning from them.

  • Are you maximizing commission opportunities?
  • Are you choosing suppliers that support your growth?
  • Are you building bookings that make financial sense?

If you’re not paying attention to your numbers, you don’t have a business, you have a hobby.

Be Strategic About Your Suppliers

Not all suppliers are equal. Some will support you, educate you and help you grow. Others won’t.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is investing in me?
  • Who provides tools, training and support?
  • Who helps me sell more effectively?

The suppliers you align with should make your job easier not harder.

Evaluate Your Host Agency

If you’re working with a host agency, this matters more than you think.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you getting real value or just paying a fee?
  • Are they supporting your growth?
  • Are they providing education and tools?
  • Do they actually care if you succeed? Or are they simply collecting a monthly fee?

A strong host agency should feel like a partner in your business, not just a place to hang your license.

Put Your Clients First

This is where the mindset shift really happens. A business owner doesn’t build their schedule around personal travel, they build it around their clients.

That means:

  • Being available when clients need you
  • Prioritizing their experience over your own
  • Thinking long-term about relationships, not just bookings

Your success comes from your clients, not your personal travel experiences.

Commit To the Work

There’s no shortcut here. Running a successful travel business takes:

  • Consistent effort
  • Ongoing education
  • Strategic decision-making
  • Time spent working on your business, not just in it

It’s easy to get caught up in destinations, resorts and dreaming about the next trip. But the advisors who succeed are the ones who stay grounded in the reality of what this is: A business.

Travel is the product. But your mindset is what determines your success. If you start thinking like a business owner, making intentional decisions, focusing on growth and putting your clients first, you’ll build something that lasts. And that’s the goal.
