The Vibe
Excellence Riviera Cancun is the perfect escape for adults (18 years +) looking for an upscale all-inclusive resort that’s not just for lovebirds. Solo travelers, families with adult children, married couples and guys or gals looking for fun in the sun will feel welcome.
The property embodies a traditional Mexican style, with fountains, tilework and landscaping reminiscent of a sophisticated Hacienda. There’s a party pool for those seeking socialization, and plenty of quiet spots along the lazy river pool for privacy and relaxation.
How I Felt
Refreshed. Taking dips in the pool from my swim-up suite, enjoying daily yoga and gym workouts and being treated to delicious, healthy food (including vegetarian options) was just the relaxing experience I needed. Taking long walks on the beach and being waited on by a friendly staff added to the rejuvenating experience.

The Digs
I was concerned that sharing a room with my husband and college-aged son might feel awkward, but our spacious swim-up suite allowed us to each have our own space. The furnished patio had a double sunbed, table with chairs, a lounger and jacuzzi tub. The moment we felt thirsty the bartender wandered by to take our drink orders, delivered to our lush, tropical oasis.
Inside, the sofa with a handy footrest and drinks table offered another lounging area. This space was divided from the beds, making it feel like a true suite. The mini-fridge and bar area were well stocked with top shelf liquor, wine, beer, water and soda.
The shower and toilet room were concealed by a frosted door, and the in-room soaking tub had no privacy so this might be an issue for some. The white walls, columns and ceiling fans gave the space a breezy, tropical vibe. Rooms were quiet, and comfortable beds made for restful sleep.
The Agenda
There’s a full schedule of activities from pool games and bike rides to trivia contests and craft projects. I preferred a laid-back schedule: hit the coffee shop for a pre-breakfast latte, followed by a long walk on the beach and a leisurely breakfast. I used the well-equipped gym and took part in a yoga class. The resort is a great option for groups, because each guest can choose their own activities and meet for meals. It’s small enough that it’s easy to find each other.
It’s a short distance into the small fishing village of Puerto Morales, and we took a taxi into town to explore one day. The hotel also arranges bike rides and free shopping trips into town. In the evening, we enjoyed live music and a circus show one night.
The Eats
With over a dozen dining venues and numerous bars, there’s something for everyone. The lobby bar was my favorite spot for a sophisticated cocktail, and I appreciated the fancy spirit-free options too.
Not every restaurant is open for every meal, so it’s worth planning. Spice, with Asian dishes and a small hibachi area, was our favorite for dinner. Be aware that there might be a wait at certain restaurants (they don’t take reservations). As a vegetarian, I found it helpful that each restaurant has a dedicated plant-based section of the menu; all the menus are digital, which means you must bring your phone everywhere.
Why I Would Go Back
I’ll admit I was a little nervous about going to Mexico. This elegant all-inclusive property made me feel safe, pampered and refreshed. It was the perfect blend of available activities, healthy dining options and a relaxing, tropical environment.
In particular, the Mexican hacienda style of the resort felt warm and welcoming. I liked the mixed ages, making it a good fit for our family. It wasn’t a party scene, but there was plenty of indulgence for those who wished to unwind.
