The Vibe
The Loren in Austin has this sophisticated vibe that feels luxurious without trying too hard. Everything is modern and beautifully designed, but it still feels warm and homey. What I loved most were all the little details. There are stacks of beautiful books, sculptural pieces, oversized plants and artwork. I also loved the mix of furniture, like vintage chairs next to modern pieces. Nothing really matches perfectly, and I think that’s part of what makes it work. Although the hotel feels very Austin, it also has an almost European edge. The views of Lady Bird Lake and the city are the icing on the cake. It’s one of those hotels where you find yourself looking around and thinking, “I could live here.”
How I Felt
Calm. I felt calm from the moment I walked in. The hotel has a quiet, effortless atmosphere that immediately slows you down. Even though I was in the middle of Austin, it somehow felt like a peaceful little escape from the city.
The Digs
The best part about the rooms are the huge windows overlooking either the lake or the city. The bathrooms are also especially nice, with lots of stone, large showers and soaking tubs in many of the rooms. Guests also have access to the rooftop pool, complimentary electric bikes and the hotel’s art space at the historic Paggi House.
The Agenda
I started the morning with coffee and breakfast overlooking Lady Bird Lake, then I took a walk along the waterfront trail before heading to nearby South Congress for a little shopping. I spent an afternoon back at The Loren lounging by the rooftop pool, and for dinner I enjoyed a leisurely meal at Nido, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, with some of the best views of the Austin skyline.
The Eats
The Loren has several great places to eat and drink, but Nido, the rooftop restaurant and bar, was my favorite. The views are beautiful, and I’d recommend starting with the oysters or tuna tartare and then trying one of the fresh fish dishes. The Café at The Loren is much more casual and perfect for coffee and a pastry in the morning or a light lunch. Later in the day it becomes a nice spot for a glass of wine or a cocktail. What I liked most is that you really don’t have to leave the hotel; you can have coffee downstairs in the morning, lunch at the café and end the day with dinner and drinks overlooking Austin from the rooftop.
Why I Would Go Back
For the feeling of relaxation. The hotel truly feels like you’re in a luxe hotel minus the stuffiness. Once you stay here, you’ll understand this feeling.
