Situated in Southern Alberta, one of Canada’s 10 provinces, Calgary is a laid-back, metropolitan city with no shortage of charming qualities. From its friendly residents and soaring skyscrapers to its quick-access to nature and intriguing western roots — which are on full display each summer during the annual Calgary Stampede — this under-the-radar destination has something to offer visitors of all ages.

If you’re hoping to experience the allure of Blue Sky City for yourself — fun fact, Calgary averages 333 sunny days a year — consider spending your nights at The Westley Calgary Downtown, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, for a restful and well-situated stay.

The Vibe

Cowboy couture. My stay at The Westley fell over Stampede time, and the hotel and its staff were adequately festive. From Smithbilt hats and bolos to a cute saddle display that greeted guests near the hotel’s entrance, I was ready to say “Yahoo!” from the moment I walked through the door. While I was loving the general cowboy vibe, I’m sure guests of The Westley will find the property comfortable and accommodating no matter the time of year they visit as warm colors and modern decor throughout the main lobby and adjoining restaurant act as a cozy embrace from the hustle and bustle of the city.

How I Felt

Welcome. From the moment I checked in at the front desk to the goodie bag and personalized message shared to my room’s TV screen, everyone at The Westley was friendly and attentive. The stereotypes surrounding Canadian kindness totally lived up to the hype, and in the hospitality world that earns them a 10/10 in my book.

The Digs

I stayed in a Savour — Corner King Room, and it was bright and beautiful with large tinted windows, a sizable king bed (with supportive pillows) and a glamorous bathroom with adjustable lighting and a walk-in shower. The room stayed just the right temperature as I fiddled with the thermostat to account for chilly Alberta mornings and toasty July nights, and I slept like a baby thanks to courteous neighbors and plush bedding.

The Agenda

My schedule was jam-packed with sightseeing tours in and around Calgary, restaurant reservations and, of course, lots of time spent experiencing the Stampede. Thanks to its central location, The Westley was a convenient homebase for my busy itinerary. Similarly, it was a comfortable retreat when I needed to step away and recharge after all the action.

The Eats

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are just a quick elevator ride away as the hotel’s onsite Mexican restaurant, Fonda Fora, serves all three. In addition to tasty eats, Fonda Fora serves delicious coffees, teas and juices from its well-equipped coffee bar, while cocktails, mocktails and more are also available. Sadly, I only had time to stop by for breakfast one morning during my stay — I ordered the “Continental” which came with my choice of three items and a coffee — but it was indeed a delicious and filling way to start the day.

Why I Would Go Back

The Westley’s prime location, amiable staff and peaceful accommodations all point to me considering the property for my next visit to Calgary — whenever that might be! I fear I was bitten by the Stampede bug, and I’m already working on convincing my husband we need to make a return visit together sometime soon.
