Following last month's events in Puerto Vallarta, some spring breakers are looking to travel advisors for reassurance that Mexico is the right fit for their upcoming vacation. While Puerto Vallarta remains under a Level 3 travel advisory issued by the U.S. Department of State suggesting visitors reconsider travel at this time, popular tourist spots on the other side of the country in Quintana Roo — including Cancun, Tulum and Riviera Maya — remain a familiar and viable option for travelers.
While it’s true Quintana Roo is also under a travel advisory, it’s a Level 2, meaning the U.S. Department of State is encouraging vacationers to "exercise increased caution” while visiting the area, something ALG Vacations put into perspective last week by reminding travelers the same advisory has been previously issued to other destinations like France and Italy.
As part of our ongoing reporting in Cancun and Playa del Carmen ahead of spring break 2026, The Compass on VAX caught up with RIU Hotels & Resorts to find out what the popular hotel brand is doing to help visitors feel more confident and comfortable during this time.
“Cancun is today a safe destination ready to receive international tourism,” said Alexis Rios, a member of RIU Hotels & Resorts' sales department in Costa Mujeres. “Travelers can be sure that they will find a stable environment. At RIU, we enforce this security with rigorous internal protocols so that each stay is as pleasant as it is safe.”
Diving further into the topic of safety, Rios told The Compass that RIU prioritizes controlled access protocols and advanced security infrastructure at each property. “Security is the fundamental pillar of our hospitality,” he said. “To guarantee a safe and private environment, we maintain strict access control in all our facilities. Each of our guests is identified by an official wristband; this system allows us to ensure that only people with an active reservation enjoy our services, maintaining the resort as an exclusive and protected space at all times.”
RIU’s staff understands vacationers might be feeling a little anxious to visit Mexico right now, and Rios told us the brand is working to address this issue through prevention and enhanced customer service. “Our strategy is based on prevention and on offering an immediate response through our customer service channels and commercial partners (BDMs), ensuring that any concern is managed with the professionalism and support that characterizes our chain,” he said.
Regarding who guests can go to if they have specific questions during or ahead of their stay at a RIU hotel, Rios suggested travelers reach out to their trusted travel advisor for assistance. “For us, communication is key,” he said. “Travel agents have the direct support of their Business Development Managers (BDMs), who are available to resolve any questions before or during their clients' stay. This direct channel allows us to offer quick and personalized solutions, ensuring that every trip has the expert support of our team at all times.”
