As part of our continued coverage in Cancun and the surrounding area ahead of spring break 2026, The Compass on VAX and ALG Vacations headed to Playa del Carmen to see what the situation is like south of the Hotel Zone. Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen is about an hour outside of Cancun and is popular for its many resorts as well as dining and shopping near Quinta Avenida (5th avenue). The town’s main beach is the spot where travelers heading to Cozumel can catch a ferry or simply relax and enjoy some time beneath the tropical sun.
The Current Traffic and Transportation Experience
We headed down to Playa del Carmen via a private Amstar transfer around 11:30 a.m. As we exited the Hotel Zone and got onto the main drag, traffic was fairly heavy but flowing at a steady pace, with only a slight backup in traffic as we neared the Playa del Carmen exit. As frequent travelers to the area know, it’s not uncommon to see police posted in designated spots along medians as you drive the stretch between Cancun International Airport and the resorts, and our journey this week was no different. That being said, the police presence was at a normal level, and we never felt unsafe as we traveled the stretch of highway.
The Current Mood in Playa del Carmen
Our stroll down Quinta Avenida was colorful and charming. Shop owners beckoned us to come inside; folks sold sliced mango and other fresh fruit on the street with a smile, and brightly painted buildings lined either side of the pedestrian-only thoroughfare. The crowd was medium-sized, and restaurants appeared to have a steady stream of business as people dined from inviting rooftops and festive patios. Once we made it to the beach, it was clear it was the place to be with visitors snapping photos beneath the Instagram-famous Portal Maya arch, locals performing the Dance of the Flyers and ferries traveling to-and-fro to Cozumel. A feeling of excitement filled the air, and the stretch of sand was a great spot to take a moment to relax in the shade before continuing our adventure. Travelers in Playa del Carmen appeared relaxed and happy, and we didn’t overhear any murmurs of concern or anxiety.
The Current Outlook Among Locals
Our chats with locals revealed feelings of normalcy. One man told me his sister and her young children stayed with him in the Cancun area at the end of February, the same time as current events unfolded on the other side of the country in Puerto Vallarta, and they never had a reason to feel nervous or unsafe here in the Riviera Maya.
