Waikiki, which means “spouting water” in Hawaiian, has always been a place of rejuvenation, starting when Hawaiian royalty surfed its waves and relaxed along its shores. These days, it’s known for its lively beaches, shopping and nightlife, but there’s also a more peaceful side to Waikiki for travelers looking to focus on wellness, self-care and taking a break from the grind.

If you’re looking to get out in nature, breathe in fresh air and take in stunning views, Waikiki makes it easy with a variety of hiking trails just 15 to 30 minutes away — some of which are even accessible via public transportation. Options range from easy coastal walks to more challenging ridge hikes. A popular choice is the iconic Diamond Head hike, which rewards you with panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean, along with historic WWII bunkers. (Pro tip: Go early to beat the crowds and catch the beautiful sunrise.)

I was fortunate to hike the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail, a lesser-known gem. It’s quieter than the more well-known trails, shaded by a forest canopy, and offers stunning views of the ridgelines, ocean and even Diamond Head in the distance.

For a more zen start to your day, the iconic Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, offers guests many wellness activities such as daily complimentary beachfront yoga (twice a day!), mindful meditation and a Ho'ala sunrise ceremony. I enjoyed a 6 am yoga class while watching the sun rise and hearing the ocean waves. It was the perfect way to start my busy day. The Ho'ala sunrise ceremony is filled with Hawaiian chants to bring awareness to the sun’s gifts and personal reflection, ending with a dip in the ocean to cleanse your body, mind and spirit.

The spa at Moana Surfrider is a sanctuary with Hawaiian-inspired treatments, tranquil vibes and the perfect excuse to unplug. Opening in 1901 as the first hotel in Waikiki, this resort is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a hotel refresh and distinct new looks across all three towers, each with its own unique style that blends history, charm and modern comfort. The Moana Surfrider is an elegant, yet relaxed escape in the heart of Waikiki on a beautiful stretch of beach.

The Prince Waikiki, just on the edge of Waikiki, will be opening a brand-new full-service spa in December 2025. The spa will feature the latest in health and wellness technologies, including a chill lounge and a vibe pool, creating new ways for guests to immerse themselves in self-care.  The Prince Waikiki overlooks the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and is Waikiki’s only oceanfront hotel offering all ocean view and oceanfront rooms.  Be sure to check out their activities and events as they are always creating unique experiences for guests to enjoy.

When planning a vacation to Waikiki, or anywhere, remember to carve out time for rest and renewal.  It’s in those quieter moments, whether on a mountaintop, on the beach or in the stillness of a spa, that you can reconnect with yourself. Return not just with souvenirs, but with a greater sense of balance that can help carry you through until your next getaway or inspire more self-care at home.
