While the name “Yucatán” is likely to evoke images of beloved beach destinations like Cancun, Riviera Maya and Tulum for many, those who stray off the well-trodden sun and sand tourism path will be greatly rewarded in the form of historic cities, lush jungles and endless excitement. A prime example of this is Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán and a colonial gem ripe with archaeological treasures, intriguing museums and culinary delights to discover. Welcoming millions of visitors each year, Mérida shows vacationers a different side of Mexico, making it a worthy addition to every jetsetter’s bucket list.

Of course, deciding where to stay is always a big to-do for travelers, and in Mérida this is especially true as there are so many outstanding options to choose from. Whether they have their eye on a former estate, boutique hotel or prefer a more modern build, the city has them all. For a comfortable and memorable stay, we’d like to throw Casa Lecanda into the running, a restored property dating to the 19th-century with a laid-back feel and fantastic service.

Read on to learn about our experience staying at Casa Lecanda Boutique Hotel in Mérida, Mexico.

The Vibe

Courtyard in the city. Dating to Mexico’s colonial-era, Casa Lecanda is a former mansion turned boutique hotel in the heart of Mérida’s "Gastronomic Corridor.” As such, this gorgeous property is a fabulous homebase for visitors, allowing guests to easily walk to some of the area’s most notable attractions, parks and greenspaces and, of course, eateries, in just a matter of minutes. Inside, Casa Lecanda wows with bold interiors and decor, a gorgeous pool and patio area and charming suites and guest rooms.

How I Felt

Fancy. The hotel’s bright-red lobby immediately intrigued me, setting the tone for an elegant and intimate stay at this small, seven-room hotel. While it was my first time visiting Mérida and I was eager to explore, Casa Lecanda’s beautiful interiors left me feeling comfortable and relaxed throughout the duration of my stay. I loved having slow mornings at the onsite dining area and returning after dark was a treat too as warm, moody lighting revealed a new side of the property.

The Digs

I stayed in the hotel’s Garden Suite, a spacious and elegant room boasting a king-size bed; a sizable stone tub lit by a sparkling overhead chandelier; a massive oil painting by famous artist Malena Peón; a large wooden wardrobe and more. While it took me a day to find the light switch for the bathroom (it was hidden under the vanity near the sink), I really enjoyed staying in the Garden Suite, coming to appreciate its high ceilings and no-frills open layout.

The Agenda

I was in Mérida as part of a press trip hosted by Yucatán Travel. As such, my schedule was pretty busy with visits to other parts of the state including Izamal, two restored haciendas and a day spent at the K’íiwik: Mayan World Tourism Fair, a large-scale event dedicated to showcasing the Mayan World region or “Mundo Maya.” In our limited downtime, I did have a chance to dine at one nearby restaurant, Oliva Enoteca, as well as walk Paseo de Montejo, the city’s beloved tree-lined avenue.

The Eats

As I mentioned above, breakfast at Casa Lecanda was a delight, giving guests the five-star treatment with a filling spread comprising made-to-order eggs, potatoes, refried beans, bread, fresh jam and coffee or juice. Spending each morning filling up on tasty eats near the pool was truly rejuvenating, and I loved chatting with my travel companions and catching up on a chapter of my book each morning. While I didn’t have the chance to enjoy lunch or dinner service, I did try a mocktail at Anata Vin Bar, the trendy wine bar located inside the hotel, and it was creative and delicious.

Why I Would Go Back

Between its prime location, attentive staff, beautiful interiors and delectable breakfast spreads, Casa Lecanda is a fabulous choice for travelers spending time in Mérida. I would return to the property without hesitation as its comfortable accommodations are the perfect place to recharge and unwind before a day (or night) spent exploring the city on foot. I would love to taste my way through the adjacent Gastronomic Corridor and wouldn’t mind ending the evening with a nightcap at Anata Vin Bar.
