This fall, non-profit organization Mercy Ships will make its grand debut in the U.S. with its first-ever signature event “A Transformational Journey” in beautiful Miami, Florida. To help celebrate the organization’s arrival in the States, Mercy Ships is hosting a “Welcome to Miami” reception in Coral Gables on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. The event will be free to the public, and attendees can expect to learn more about Mercy Ships’ mission, innovation in healthcare and how they can join the non-profit’s global movement of providing “Hope and Healing” by attending its signature event later this fall.
Mercy Ships is a non-profit organization that works to bring accessible healthcare to impoverished communities through state-of-the-art hospital ships such as the Global Mercy which just arrived in Sierra Leone earlier this summer. Each Mercy Ship acts as a floating city playing host to over 1,500 volunteers from over 60 nations who work to provide free surgical, medical and dental care to people in need.

In an interview with The Compass magazine in the summer of 2023, Cecilia Villa, head of resource development for Mercy Ships shared more about the organization’s work. “The surgeries onboard in a country vary greatly from destination to destination,” she said. Villa mentioned that the most common surgeries performed by Mercy Ships volunteers include cleft lip and palate, cataracts, bowed legs, burns and scars, dental work and obstetric fistula repair for injuries sustained during childbirth.
The Mercy Ships welcome reception will take place at the Kellogg Northwestern School of Management and will include complimentary cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Interested parties can sign up to attend by RSVPing on the event’s dedicated Eventbrite page.
