With the sun shining, birds chirping and warm weather enticing travelers to get outdoors, an increasing number of individuals are feeling burnt-out from their excessive screen times. In fact, a 2025 Hilton Trends Report noted one in four travelers are making a conscious effort to put their screens away while on vacation, further exacerbating the need for digital detox-friendly destinations in the U.S.
To help these adventurers have a successful, screen-free trip, Upgraded Points, an online resource providing travelers with information to maximize their trips, conducted a study to evaluate the U.S. cities best (and least) suited for a digital detox. The organization analyzed the top 100 park cities on 14 different criteria that would impact a visitor’s ability to have a relaxing, digital-free stay, including 5G coverage area, population density, access to nature, hiking or wellness opportunities, light pollution and off-the-grid Airbnbs. Each variable was given a score of zero to five based on how important it was to the digital detoxing experience, with overall scores closer to 100 representing the most favorable conditions.

Upgraded Points noted in their analysis of the data that these results were rather unsurprising, as these cities have a high population density and expansive 5G coverage — two factors that make it extremely difficult for travelers to disconnect from the online world. Additionally, six of the ten less-than-ideal U.S. cities for a detox are on the East Coast, where urban infrastructure and digital convenience dominate. Upgraded Points suggests, based on their data, that travelers head to the Mountain West region for the best opportunity to unplug.
