There was a time in my career when I didn’t have access to the types of supplier relationships I do now. I lived in a location where in-person events, supplier meetups and networking opportunities were few and far between. Like many travel advisors, I spent a lot of time working alone, head down, focused on growing my business from behind a screen.

A move several years ago changed that. Suddenly, I was in a place where suppliers were based, events were within driving distance and training opportunities were far more accessible. That shift allowed me to experience firsthand the power of building relationships within the travel industry, not just virtually, but face to face.

I’ve always known that relationships matter in business. But what I didn’t fully appreciate until that change was how much they matter. Attending events, showing up for trainings and meeting others in the industry helped me grow not just as a business owner, but as a person. I’ve found renewed energy and perspective in the company of others who truly understand the travel advisor life.

It’s easy to think that isolating ourselves is the answer when we’re trying to get things done, especially when we feel overwhelmed or behind. But while being on the road constantly can slow down our to-do lists, the right events and connections can do the opposite. They pull us out of the rut. They remind us why we’re here in the first place.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard someone say they were ready to leave the industry only to attend an event and walk away re-energized and excited again. Sometimes, being in a room filled with like-minded people is all it takes to rekindle that spark.

If you’re not sure where to begin, there are many ways to find events that can inspire and connect you. Organizations like ASTA and CLIA host conferences and trainings throughout the year. Many suppliers offer regional events or roadshows to help you get to know their products better. If you’re part of a host agency, make it a priority to attend one of their in-person gatherings. And if you’re feeling disconnected, reach out to your favorite BDM and ask if they know of any upcoming opportunities in your area. You don’t have to do this alone, someone always knows where the next great connection is happening.

If you’ve been feeling stuck or uninspired, I encourage you to say yes to the next opportunity to connect. Whether it’s a FAM trip, a local supplier training or a national conference, there’s real power in stepping out of your bubble. Relationships fuel growth. They open doors. They reignite passion. And they remind you that you’re never really in this alone.
